⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: the past is never really gone. It’s one long chain linking the present and also the future...” ~ Dr. Emma Colley in The Queen of Hearts.
I wasn’t sure if I would like this book as I am not a huge fan of medical dramas - I watch some but it’s not really a thing for me (if anything I have to turn my head if they are taking blood or giving an injection or showing a surgery). But at the heart this book is about the powers of friendship and forgiveness. .
I found Zadie to be likable and very relatable as she juggled her kids’ schedules (her youngest, Delaney is a trip —@Kimmerymartin I think Delaney would make an excellent picture book character for little kids if you ever want to write one of those!). I could relate to the way Emma felt awkward and that she never knew what to say and after learning about her past, I could understand why she felt that way. .
Although I read reviews that said Nick was not a nice guy, I disagree, I think ultimately he is a nice guy but being the hot, sexy doctor in his 20s went to his head.
The author did a wonderful job of exploring how people evolve over time, the roles of love, kindness, understanding and forgiveness in friendships as well as how partners in a marriage can truly support one another. I don’t like to give a bad review, because I know the author put a lot of heart and soul into the book, but this was just not for me. .
Jon and Chloe are friends, but Jon is dorky and Chloe is cooler. She likes one of the cool guys and he likes her, but he bullies Jon. Jon is kidnapped by a weird substitute teacher and wakes up four years later with no recollection of what has happened in the last four years. But now he is much stronger than before. He also has supernatural powers.
This book was unbelievable and maybe a little sci-fi, which is not my thing. If you like science fiction or don’t mind books that are completely not plausible, you will probably like this as Caroline Kepnes’s writing is great, her voice, her characters are well developed and it reads like someone is telling you a story.
